Paris, Levrault, 1827. In-8 publisher's printed boards. Lithographed frontispiece portrait of Hyacinthe Maglanovich. Inside edge of second plate fragile. A few very small brown spots. A good copy as issued of this rare first edition of one of Mérimée's earliest works. "When La Guzla was published anonymously in 1827, almost everyone believed it to be an authentic folk ballad. It wasn't until March 1828 and Goethe's revelation that the author's identity came to light. The work, which has been republished only five times since the original edition, has hardly been read for its own sake. Initially regarded as a reliable testimony to the customs and mores of the South Slavs, it was paraphrased as such and, once Mérimée's mystification became known, praised as a successful imitation of folk songs. "Anne Geisler-Szmulewicz, Violence et ballade populaire (Sur La Guzla de Mérimée), in Romantisme 2008/2 (n° 140), pp. 129-141 (Barbier II, 598; Vicaire V, 705.). Also included: - SANVITALE (Luigi), Saggio di novelle. Parma, Co' tipi bodoniani, 1803. In-12, (1) f., XXVIII pp. (1) f., 120-(2) pp. Bound in: [FILIOLI (Giacomo)], Il Mecenate et i Dotti. Napoli, Dai torchi della Societa' filomatica, 1829. 148 pp. Green half calf, smooth spine decorated (mid 19th c. binding). From the Chodron de Courcel library, with gilt bookplate on tail, and stamps on titles. - COLLINS (William), The Poetical works... London, Harding, 1798.
