FLAUBERT (Gustave). The Temptation of Saint Anthony. Paris, Charpentier et Cie, 1874. In-8 paperback, printed cover, in a blue calf folder with cold-romantic decoration (broken in several parts) and slipcase. Minor foxing. First edition. Inspired by a painting by Breughel seen during a trip to Italy, Flaubert produced no less than 3 versions of this very special text between 1849 and 1874, so much so that he himself considered the poem to be "his life's work".
