BASTON (Abbé, Canon of Rouen). Jean Bockelson ou Le Roi de M - Lot 456
BASTON (Abbé, Canon of Rouen). Jean Bockelson ou Le Roi de Munster, fragment historique. Paris et Besançon, Gauthier Frères, 1824.
In-8 blond half calf, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding).
"BASTON (l'abbé). He was a distinguished, learned and prolific writer. Born in Rouen in 1741, appointed bishop of Sées
of Sées in 1813, a few years later, under the Restoration, he had to retire because of his liberal ideas; he died in 1825. Throughout his life, he was subject to the strangest hallucinations, visions, forecasts, etc., but what gives these phenomena a special interest is that they are reported by the very person who experienced them. Baston left four volumes of unpublished, highly interesting memoirs on his life; M. Canel made use of them in his curious Notice sur la vie et les écrits de l'abbé Baston, published in Rouen in 1861." Brunet, Les Fous littéraires, p. 15.
Scattered foxing. Bookplate P. Duputel. Ex-libris JM (Frère I, 74.)
