BELBEUF (Marquis de). Histoire des grands panetiers de Norma - Lot 339
BELBEUF (Marquis de). Histoire des grands panetiers de Normandie et du franc-fief de la grande paneterie. Paris, Dumoulin, 1856. In-8, green half-chagrin, ribbed spine decorated with boxes semis of gilt ermines, gilt title (period binding). Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, printed on Chine, and 3 plates (vue de Gouy, tombeau de la reine Mathilde, and portrait of J.P.P. Godart marquis de Belbeuf). The panetier of Normandy was a high dignitary of the duchy of Normandy during the ducal period, whose office was to serve the duke at great ceremonies. In a charter from the 1170s, Henry II of England granted this office to Ouen de Malpalu, i.e. not only to serve the duke, but also to guard the weights within the jurisdiction of the city of Rouen and its suburbs. Until 1256, the panetier de Rouen (or panetier duc de Normandie) collected various taxes on bakeries, breads and their transport. The mayor of Rouen and the town's inhabitants obtained from Saint Louis the transfer of these taxes to the town, in exchange for an annual rent of twenty livres tournois payable in half on Saint Michael's Day and at Christmas, in favor of the panetier Laurent le Chambellan. Unlike other offices in the Duchy of Normandy, this office appears to have been hereditary from the ducal era, and then purely honorary at a time yet to be determined. Since at least the 13th century, possession of this office was also linked to the transmission of the land and seigneury of Gouy (Seine-Maritime). (wikipedia). Armorial bookplate of Comte de Poncins. Bookplate JM.
