Manuscript - [BECDELIEVRE (Pierre de)]. Commentarius in Ethicam Ar[istote]lis. sl, 1727. In-4 of [1] f. (engraved portrait of Aristotle by Moncornet), [669] pp. handwritten in ink, one engraved portrait of Saint Peter, one folded printed leaf with engraved portrait of Saint Sebastian (restored tear), [7] pp. of handwritten index, [6] blank ff. and [1] final f. bearing on verso the inscription "Pierre de Becdelievre Premier President de la Cour des Aydes, fondateur de l'Hopital / 1727" surmounted by his large arms drawn in ink. Light marginal spotting on a few pages. Brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, title in gilt letters ("Petrus / de Bec/delievre/Dequevilly") (period binding). Covers and corners slightly worn. Pierre de Becdelièvre (1639-1726), marquis of Hocqueville and Cany, lord of Grainville la Teinturière, first President of the Court of Aydes of Normandy, was the founder of the hospital of the Religieux de la Charité after Louis XIV had given him, by council decree of November 24, 1695, the maladrerie de Saint-Jacques (existing since the 13th century in Grainville) as well as all nearby leprosaria. He began construction of the buildings and chapel in 1700, and brought in religious from the Order of Saint-Jean-de-Dieu, who remained there until the French Revolution.
