DRANER (Jules Renard dit). Paris under siege. Scenes of Pari - Lot 97
DRANER (Jules Renard dit). Paris under siege. Scenes of Parisian life during the siege. - Memories of the siege of Paris. Soldiers of the Republic. - Memories of the siege of Paris. The Defenders of the Capital. Paris, from the office of L'Éclipse, [1870-1871].
Three folio volumes (318 x 248 mm), 32 plates each. Folded, in plum, dark green or red cloth publisher's folders embossed with cold floral motifs, first boards illustrated in color, renewed fastening laces and modern slipcase.
Each album consists of an illustrated title and 31 captioned plates, lithographed and colored after Draner, humorously depicting military types and scenes of daily life. Published in the journal L'Éclipse and subsequently collected in volumes, they testify to the vitality of the press during this period of intense political upheaval.
Belgian cartoonist and caricaturist Draner (1833-1926) contributed to several Parisian newspapers (Le Charivari, L'Illustration, le Paris-comique, L'Éclipse and le Journal pour rire). He also designed costumes for Offenbach's operas-bouffes, including those for La Grande-duchesse de Gérolstein and La Vie parisienne.
Spines of folders reinforced and a little rubbed, a few plates evenly and lightly scorched, otherwise a fine set.
(Colas, nos. 892, 893 and 89; Hiler, 744).
