ROYE (J.). Chronique scandaleuse, ou Histoire des estranges - Lot 91
ROYE (J.). Chronique scandaleuse, ou Histoire des estranges faicts arrivez soubs le regne de Louys XI. Roy de France. Depuis l'an 1460 iusques à 1483. Sl, sn, 1620. In-4, cream vellum, smooth spine titled in ink, gilt arms in center of boards (period binding). Published anonymously, like the 1611 original, the first to bear the title Chronique scandaleuse. This excellent historical chronicle was written by a contemporary of Louis XI, a Parisian bourgeois and notary at the Châtelet, who meticulously recorded almost daily events at court, in Paris and in government; the work is more developed from 1463 to 1479. It is said to be a rich historical source in many respects. This chronicle was reprinted in the 1747 edition of Mémoires de Commines. Corners and covers worn, a few pages browned, rare foxing. A very fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Claude du Sauzay, seigneur de Varenne. He was successively a lawyer at the Court of Parliament, King's Counselor and private lieutenant at the Presidential Seat of Lyon and at the Parliament of Dombes (O.H.R. 2383.)
