JOINVILLE (Jean de). Histoire de Saint Louis, followed by th - Lot 86
JOINVILLE (Jean de). Histoire de Saint Louis, followed by the credo and letter of Louis X. Paris, Renouard, 1868. In-4, blue chagrin, richly decorated ribbed spine, double gilt fillet framing the boards with fleur-de-lis semi in the center, double gilt fillet on the edges, wide gilt inner border, gilt head (signed Bradel binding). New edition, with the text reduced to the spelling of the charters, published by Natalis de Wailly for the Société de l'Histoire de France. Unique uncut copy printed on vellum and enriched with 3 hors-texte plates, including 2 miniatures. These finely hand-painted color miniatures, one of which shows Jean de Joinville presenting his "Life of Saint Louis" to King Louis X the Hutin, are exact copies of those in the 1330 manuscript held by the BNF. They were originally produced by Mahiet, a Parisian illuminator active between 1323 and 1352 and nicknamed "the master of the lives of Saint Louis". A superb copy, elegantly bound by Bradel.
