Germany - POTEN (Bernhard von). Unser Volk in Waffen. Das Deutsche Heer in Wort und Bild. Berlin & Stuttgart, Spermann, [1885-1887]. Fort in-folio (396 x 290 mm) with XI pp. 1 f. n. o., 385 pp. 3 f. n. o. interspersed between pp. 308-309. Marbled fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine, red chagrin title and date-pieces, gilt numeral at foot, boards framed with a wide frieze and gilt fillets with small corner fleurons, roulette on spines and endpapers, gilt head, untrimmed, delivery cover preserved (Lachambre relieur). Monumental study illustrated by Christian Speyer with a frontispiece and 52 plates out of text of German uniforms, 46 in halftone and 5 in chromolithography, most under serpents, as well as numerous figures in the text in black and bistre. The frontispiece features a fine gilded medallion portrait of Prussian colonel Bernhard von Poten (1828-1909). A copy by the painter Édouard Detaille (1848-1912), bound in his cipher. A fine copy in a signed binding (Colas, no. 2415; Hiler, p. 719).
