Impression madrilène - CHATEAUBRIAND (François René de). Mem - Lot 15
Impression madrilène - CHATEAUBRIAND (François René de). Memorias cartas y documentos autenticos concernientes à la vida y muerte de S.A.R. Carlos Fernando de Artois, infante de Francia, Duque de Berry. Madrid, Real, 1825.
In-8, red morocco, richly decorated smooth spine, very wide gilt decoration framing the boards with large gilt numeral stamped on the upper board, gilt roulette on the edges, wide gilt inner border, gilt edges (period binding).
Edition translated from French into Spanish by the Marquis de Las Hormazas. It is illustrated with a portrait-frontispiece of the Duc de Berry engraved by Juan Carrasa after Antonio Guerrero.
In these memoirs, Chateaubriand gives a dramatic account of the Duc de Berry's death, clearly implicating one of Louis XVIII's closest associates, Decazes, in what he considers an odious political machination.
Very slight foxing to first few pages. A superb copy in contemporary morocco with the cipher of the DUCHESSE DE BERRY, Marie-Caroline-Ferdinande-Louise de Bourbon-Sicile (1798 - 1870), wife of Charles-Ferdinand d'Artois, Duc de Berry and second son of Charles X. She was best known for her unsuccessful attempt, in 1832, to foment a legitimist uprising in the Vendée. She had built up a luxurious library, remarkable both for the choice of editions and the richness of the bindings, and for the importance of the works it contained (O.H.R. 2554, iron no. 6).
