Old stretcher frame (small gaps) Signed and dated lower middle Paul Grégoire Sour - muet 1814. On reverse Paul Grégoire / sourd muet 1814. At top right, two labels stuck to the canvas: 124 (?) and 41. H. 81 - L. 100 cm Empire style frame in wood and gilded stucco, decorated with palmettes (small missing parts). Exhibition: Salon de 1814, n° 466 La Tentation de St - Antoine. The catalog indicates Grégoire, sourd - muet, rue Neuve - St - Augustin, n. 41. Paul Grégoire, who painted on velvet with his brother Gaspard, exhibited at the Salon from 1793 to 1819. The Musée Carnavalet (Paris) holds his portrait of Abbé Charles - Michel de l'Epée (1712 - 1789), founder of the Institution des sourds - muets.
