[SERGENT (Antoine François)]. Portraits des grands hommes, femmes illustres, et sujets memorables de France, gravés et imprimés en couleurs, dédiés au Roi. Paris, Blin, s.d. [1787-1792]. In-folio, blond half calf, smooth spine decorated (period binding). First edition of this remarkable collection of color engravings. The illustrations include a title engraved in bistre, a dedication to the King engraved by Beaublé and 192 plates printed in color, almost all drawn by Sergent, and engraved by Sergent, De Cernel, Ridé, Morret, Roger etc. Each of the 96 oval portraits of famous men or women, accompanied by the dates and arms of the character, is followed by an account of his or her life, topped by a half-page print representing one of his or her famous deeds. (Cohen 951; Quérard IX, 70.) Antoine François Sergent (1751 - 1847) was a watercolorist, draftsman, burin engraver and writer. He produced some highly regarded printed portraits. (Bénézit VII, 716.) A very fine copy.
