[SENAC DE MEILHAN (G.)]. Memoirs of Anne de Gonzagues, Princ - Lot 708
[SENAC DE MEILHAN (G.)]. Memoirs of Anne de Gonzagues, Princess Palatine. London, s.n., 1786.
In-8, blond granite calf, ornate smooth spine, double gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges.
First edition of the memoirs of Anne Marie de Gonzagues de Clèves-Nevers (1616-1684). In love with her cousin Henri de Guise, she disguised herself as a man to join him at Sedan in 1640, before marrying Edouard de Bavière, Prince of the Palatinate. A prominent figure at court with links to the Condé family, she played an important political role during the Fronde, acting as a liaison between the princes and the court. In 1660, she was appointed superintendent of the household of Anne of Austria, but was forced to resign by order of the king the following year. In 1671, she abandoned the pleasures of the court for a pious life until her death. Her memoirs, ending in 1661, are a rich chronicle of court life, parties and intrigues involving Mazarin and other high-ranking figures. Wide light wetness.
