[MOTTEVILLE (Mme de)]. Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire d'Anne d'Autriche épouse de Louis XIII roi de France. Amsterdam, Changuion, 1723. 5 vol. in-12, granite calf, ornate ribbed spines (worn bindings). First edition of these famous memoirs by Anne of Austria's lady-in-waiting and confidante, covering the years 1615-1666, on the queen, her private life and the secret workings of the Court during the Fronde. An eyewitness from 1643 onwards, Mme de Motteville observed and thus gave an overall picture of the Regency. Although the picture she paints is less picturesque than that of Cardinal de Retz, it is just as lively and more truthful.
