Heraldry - LA ROQUE (Gilles André de). Les Blasons des Armes de la royale maison de Bourbon, et de ses alliances recherchées par le sieur de La Rocque. Paris, Pierre Firens, 1626.
Small folio of [4] ff. (including engraved title), 121-[1] ff. Lavalliard calf, ornate ribbed spine, double gilt fillet framing the boards (period binding). Upper spine split, headbands worn.
According to Brunet, "a book that has become uncommon", who specifies that it should contain, on page 93, the large double-page plate engraved by Firens, depicting ]e Sacre de Louis XIII; it is indeed present here, but on page 97, which is the correct place.
"Very fine book, now very rare, especially in good condition" Saffroy (I, 12205.).
LA ROQUE, Sieur de La Loutière (Normandy), Historiographe du Roi et chevalier de l'ordre de S. Michel, né a Cormelles, près de Caen, en 1598, est mort à Paris le 3 février 1687 (ou 1686 suivant Huet et l'abbé de La Rue). Knowledge of genealogies and coats of arms was this author's main field of study. (Frère, II, 159-160).
The final printing is dated April 4, 1621. The apology to the Reader (sign. ^c) is placed between pp. 9 & 10 (sign. E and E2).
Montchal bookplate engraved full-page and enhanced. This copy also belonged to Baron de Wismes, who has noted information on its provenance and numerous bibliographical remarks, all in pencil, on the first flyleaf. Ex-libris J.M. Ex-libris Lamberti Riviere.
