Lady Jane Grey (1537-1554) was briefly Queen of England for nine days in July 1553, between the death of her cousin Edward VI and her deposition in favor of Mary I. She was the great-granddaughter of the Queen of England.
Great-granddaughter of Henry VII, King of England, and granddaughter of Marie Tudor, widow of Louis XII, Jeanne Grey was chosen as successor by Edward VI, who excluded her half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth I from the succession to prevent Mary the Catholic from ascending the throne. However, the young queen was quickly ousted by her cousin Mary, who had her locked up in the Tower of London. Well aware that Joan had been manipulated by John Dudley, Mary initially wished to spare her. However, she had her executed because of her alleged involvement in a plot, and because of the revolt led by her father, the Duke of Suffolk.
Lady Jeanne, despite her very young age at the time of her death, had already been recognized by her contemporaries as "a lady of good repute". Indeed, she is described by historian Alison Weir as "one of the most erudite female minds of the sixteenth century".
