[DODSLEY (Robert)]. Chronicle of the Kings of England, written according to the stile of the ancient Jewish Historians. By Nathan-Ben-Saddi, Priest of the same Nation. London, sn, 1750. In-12, xvi-115-[1] pp. marbled calf, ornate smooth spine, title page, red pages (period binding). A very fine copy. Nathan-Ben-Saadi is the pseudonym of Dodsley. An English edition of this work, continued until the reign of George IV and accompanied by notes inspired by a very pronounced radicalism, appeared in 1823 (Barbier). See p. 115 for the end of the chronicle (last words) illustrating the author's royalist sentiments. Robert Dodsley (1703-1764), English poet, bookseller and literary scholar. First a clerk, then a valet, he wrote verses that appeared by subscription under the title "La Muse en livrée" (1732), opened a bookshop in 1735 that became a meeting place for elite writers, founded important periodical collections and made a fortune. Dodsley wrote plays for the stage, some of which were successful: "The Jeweller's Shop" (1735), "The King and the Miller of Mansfield" (1737), "Sir John Cockle at court" (1738) and published a work: "The Economy of the human life" (1751) which was translated into French.
