BASNAGE de Beauval (Jacques). Le Grand Tableau de l'Univers, ou l'Histoire des évènemens de l'Eglise [...] représentée par des Tailles douces [...] Amsterdam, Lindenberg, 1714.
2 parts in one vol. in-folio marbled calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, boards decorated with a double framing lace and a beautiful gilded plate stamped in the centers (scene with religious figures and foliage around a sphere). Restorations, endpapers redone (copy probably rebound).
Engraved portrait with facing dedication leaf with headband and vignette (list of subscribers on verso), engraved and colored frontispiece with facing explanation (itself with colored headband and cul-de-lampe), title with title vignette, privilege (2 pp.), the first page of the second dedication (to Johan Trip) has been obscured by a blank leaf (without the 2 dedication leaf), a portrait of Jacques Basnage by Holshalp, [12] ff. preface, [3] pp. table with on verso of the last the Explanation of the figure of Creation, two double-page maps out of text, one full-page unencrypted map (Garden of Eden) on double page, 104 engraved scenes (i-civ), mostly mid-page (except for the view of the Temple of Jerusalem on double-page out of text), 177 pp. explanations.
The 2nd part comprises: false title, frontispiece, [9] ff. preface, double-page engraved map (mounted on mitre), 36 engraved scenes ch.CV-CXXXIX (for CXL), 62 pp. and 52 pp. (Annales de l'Eglise et du Monde). Figures CIV (=CV) and CVI added (perhaps from another edition? folios numbered 1 and 29...) mounted on tabs. Missing double-page map in second part.
A good copy in a fine contemporary binding. Armorial bookplate of the Marquis de Fortia. Bookplate J.M. (Brunet I, 691; Frère I, 70.)
