[MATTHIOLE (Pierre André)]. Les Commentaires de M. Mis en François sur la derniere édition latine de l'Autheur par M. Jean DES MOULINS. Lyon, Guillaume Rouillé, [1579]. Fort in-4 of [66] ff. 852 pp. and [6] ff. Numerous woodcut figures of botany and natural history in the text. Not collated. Poor condition: Binding badly worn, spine missing. Light spotting and worm work. Title leaf is vestigial... Several leaves missing. As is... Pierandrea MATTIOLI, known in France as Matthiole (Siena 1500 -Trieste 1577) was one of the most famous botanists of his time. He directed Florence's botanical garden, created in 1543 by Cosimo de' Medici. In Venice, he published his illustrated herbarium "Commentari alla Materia Medica di Pedania Dioscoride di Anazarbeo", describing and illustrating some 1,200 species of plants for medical use, and explaining Dioscorides' work.
