GRISEL (Jean). Premieres œuvres poetiques de Jehan Grisel ro - Lot 636
GRISEL (Jean). Premieres œuvres poetiques de Jehan Grisel rouennois. A Tres-chrestien Roy de France & de Navarre, Henry IIII. Rouen, Raphaël du Petit Val, 1599. In-12 of [8]-135-[1] pp. caramel Basane, spine ribbed, gilt author, title and date, double framed in gilt fillets with small fleurs-de-lis in spandrels, small iron with dolphin in center framed by four small fleurs-de-lis (modern binding). Restoration to first and last leaves (with handwritten transfer of missing title letters to first leaf). Extremely rare and curious edition of this collection of poems, including the "Martiales visions", recounting in dream form the deeds of King Henri IV, the Amours in 32 sonnets, the Odes and Enigmes (rather licentious) and several poems inspired by Greek poets, with a typographical layout adapted to the subject, reminiscent of Apollinaire's future Calligrammes. Complete with 4 folding leaves (brackets) printed in black and red, placed between pp. 96 and 97 (unknown to Brunet, they are often missing; their existence was first reported in the Bordes copy in 1873). Jean Grisel was born in Rouen in 1567 and died on September 22, 1622. From 1603 to 1615, he was a prizewinner at the Palinods. In the eyes of his contemporaries, he was a man of learning and a poet of genius. Bookplate J.M. (Frère, II, 40).
