2 vol. in-8, red half-chagrin with corners, ornate spines, gilt title and tomaison, double gilt fillet on covers, gilt head (period binding). Some foxing.
First edition illustrated with 5 plates (facsimiles of manuscripts). Boards browned, scattered foxing.
"40 copies were printed on pap. Jésus vél, 10 pap. jésus Holl, 1 pap. carré angl, 3 pap. coquille azurée. The critical and literary analysis of Le Roman de Brut can be found at the end of vol. II, with a special pagination. 50 copies were printed separately, with a title. To these copies have been added the warning and the description of the mss. containing the Roman de Brut. The Roman de Brut is of interest to France, Denmark and England: in it, France finds intact and pure the language used in the 12th century in the considerable part of the territory occupied by the Normans; Denmark sees in it the truthful depiction of the emigrations of the peoples of the North, so common in the first centuries of our era; and England finds in it its geography, its antiquities, its literature and its popular beliefs. Composed in 1155, and containing 15,300 verses, Wace's poem, a paraphrase of Geoffroy de Monmouth's chronicle, serves as a sort of introduction to the great epic of Normandy and England known as the Roman de Rou. Layamon, in his chronicle of Brittany, says that Wace presented (or dedicated) his poem du Brut to Queen Eleanor, wife of Henry II." Frère.
