"ST-PIERRE (Ch.-Irénée Castel, abbé de), economist, born on Feb. 18, 1658, at the château de St-Pierre-Eglise near Barfleur (Manche), died in Paris on April 29, 1743, having revived the great project of perpetual peace, and thought of improving the lot of populations through reform projects in administration and institutions. A member of the Acad. franç. in 1695, Abbé de St-Pierre was expelled for having exalted, in his speech on Polysynody (Amst., 1718, in-4), the Regent's way of governing, while criticizing that of Louis XIV.
