[NAGEREL (Jean)]. L'Histoire et Cronique de Normandie [...] Rouen, Martin Le Mesgissier, 1610.
Small in-8 of [8] ff. 206-[1]-[4] pp. Following the same: Description du pays et duché de Normandie [...] Rouen, Le Mesgissier, 1580. [72] ff.
Brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding).
Complete with map of Normandy and plan of Rouen (often missing, according to Frère).
The original edition dates from 1558 (under the title Histoire de Normandie, contenant les faits et gestes des fucs et princes du dit pays...) by Jaspar de Remortier and Marguerin d'Orival in Rouen. Le Mesgissier reprinted this book several times under this title (1578, 1581, 1589 and 1610). These last three editions are, according to Brunet, page-for-page reprints of the 1578 edition, with less new typefaces. "According to Pluquet, 'Curiosités littéraires de la Normandie', Barbier wrongly attributed this work to Jean Nagerel, who is said to be the author only of the 'Description du pays et duché de Normandie'. According to the same bibliographer, Martin Le Mesgissier was also wrongly considered to be the author of this work. This bookseller, moreover highly educated, merely rejuvenated the style, and it is as editor that he signs the dedication of the editions of 1578 and subsequent years." Barbier.
The second text contains, among others, the "Livre de la Pucelle" (ff. Bb2-Cc7, one of the first printed histories of Joan of Arc), Charles IX's entry into Rouen, the lict de justice held by Charles IX in his court of Parlement in Rouen...
Several small ink underlining in margins.
Ex-libris R. Chardey (Le Havre). Ex-libris Maurice Heuzey. Bookplate Toustain-Richebourg mss. Ex-libris J.M. (Barbier II, 728; Brunet I, 1875; Frère I, 242-243.)
