MOISANT DE BRIEUX (Jacques). Poemata. Caen, Cavelier, 1663.
In-8 contemporary cream vellum.
First edition.
"BRIEUX (Jacques Moisant, sieur de), Latin and French poet, was born in Caen in 1614, and died there in June 1674. Brought up in the Reformed religion, he studied at the University of Sédan, where all the masters professed Protestantism. After serving for some time as a councillor at the Parliament of Metz, de Brieux returned to Caen, where a host of scholars flourished; following their example, he devoted himself ardently to the cultivation of letters. He would gather together at his home all the Caen scholars Huet, Bochart, La Roque, Ségrais and others. These meetings, which took place on Mondays of each week and discussed points of history and literature, gave birth to the Acad.de Caen. M. de Brieux corresponded with some of Europe's leading scholars. All Moisant de Brieux's works are rare and sought-after." Frère.
