Large in-8, jansenist bronze morocco, ribbed spine, gilt title, counterpanes lined in havana morocco mosaic with a decoration of two apple tree branches on bronze mar. bands, havana silk-lined endpapers, gilt tr., cover preserved (René Kieffer). Spine very slightly oiled. 47 life sketches, drawn and engraved on copper and wood by Auguste Lepère. Unique edition of 140 numbered copies on Arches wove paper (n°85). "One of the best productions of the Société [Normande du livre illustré]. The few etchings printed in first state are quite beautiful and quite rare." Carteret, Le Trésor du bibliophile. A very fine copy in a signed binding (Carteret, III, 197.)
