[LE PICARD (Philippe)]. La Nouvelle Fabrique des excellens t - Lot 503
[LE PICARD (Philippe)]. La Nouvelle Fabrique des excellens traits de vérité. Book to incite sad and merancholic dreamers to live of pleasure. By Philippe d'ALCRIPE Sieur de Néri en Verbos. Nouvelle Édition reveüe, corrigée et augmentée. sl [Rouen], sn [Viret], Imprimé cette année [c. 1730].
Small in-12, 220 pp. tan basane, smooth spine decorated, title page in green marble (early 19th c. binding).
This very curious collection of stories is described by Nodier in his Mélanges tirés d'une petite bibliothèque (p. 362). Philippe Le Picard was a Bernardine monk from Mortemer Abbey near Lyons-La-Forêt (Eure).
D'Alcripe is the anagram of Le Picard, Néri that of rien. Sieur de rien on Verbos, would mean nothing in words, or according to others verbos means green-wood.
Most of the adventures and anecdotes recounted in this book take place in Normandy, and have nothing to do with theology: facetiousness, scatology, gallantries, oddities, silliness, etc. The language (of the popular type) is most luscious and extravagant. For a very long time, this book was known only through this edition, given in 1730 by Adrien Larchevesque, a physician and member of the Rouen Academy, born in Gonneville en Caux and who died in Rouen in 1746. A passionate bibliophile, he had the idea of re-editing this collection, adding a dozen tales of his own.
This copy is complete between pp. 14 and 15 with a 4-fold box containing a notice from the publisher to the reader.
Ex-libris J.M. (Frère II p. 158 and 214; Gay, p. 241-42; Brunet I, 153.)
