In-folio of [1] f. engraved, illustrated and enhanced title and 105 finely engraved and richly watercolored plates. Blonde calf, spine ribbed with gilt fillets and cross-hatched nerves, title page in English "French costumes", double cold fillet framing the boards (modern English binding).
Rare copy corresponding to the second printing of the original edition published in 1827 (Paris, by the publisher) under the title: "Costumes des femmes du pays de Caux, et de plusieurs autres parties de l'ancienne province de Normandie. Most drawn by M. Lanté, engraved by M. Gatine and colored with an explanation for each plate". The first edition also included a descriptive text by La Mésangère (absent from this second printing). According to Colas, the plates in the second edition are the original plates, published without text and with the frontispiece of the first edition as a title. There are two states of the frontispiece: with and without the publisher's address. In this copy, the frontispiece includes the publisher's address (but without the address of Mancel in Caen in the title, which is absent from bibliographies...).
"It seems probable to me that the original plates were given to other publishers who made collections without text and with the frontispiece as a title [...] The plates of this second issue seem to me as good as those of the first", Colas (1770). (Brunet, III, 795; Vinet, 2277.)
A superb, well-bound copy with brightly colored, well-preserved plates.
The explanatory text of the 1925-1926 reprint of the original 1827 edition (275 copies) is included. 4 fascicles in 3 folio volumes on ff. in filled illustrated delivery covers. Reprint of the title illustrated in color, 44 pp. of text.
