BOCHART (Samuel). Three preliminary sermons on the explanati - Lot 374
BOCHART (Samuel). Three preliminary sermons on the explanation of the Book of Genesis. Avec un sermon sur ces paroles. Amsterdam, Desbordes, 1705. Small in-12 brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). "BOCHART (Samuel), Protestant minister in Caen, theologian, geographer, naturalist and philologist, born in Rouen, May 10, 1599, died suddenly, May 16, 1667 in the very midst of the Acad. de Caen, of which he was one of the glories. The gentleness and tranquility of his character make it impossible to accept the supposition put forward by most biographers and reported by Huet himself: this learned pastor did not die of a fit of rage, but rather of a hidden illness brought on by the death of a beloved daughter. A profound scholar, Bochart was fluent in most Eastern languages, including Hebrew, Syriac, Chaldean and Arabic. Queen Christine of Sweden, who had a passionate taste for letters and the arts, wrote to him in her own hand, inviting him to come to Stockholm. In 1652, Bochart undertook this trip, accompanied by Daniel Huet. Bochart's body rests at Cormelles (Calvados), in a small wood that was once part of the dwelling of his son-in-law, M. P. Le Sueur de Colleville, councillor at the Parliament of Rouen." Brother. Ex-libris J.M. (Frère I, 117.)
