The first château, built 2 km from Evreux in 1330 by Jeanne II Queen of Navarre, wife of Philippe Count of Evreux, was rebuilt in 1686 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart for Godefroy-Maurice de La Tour d'Auvergne, Duke of Bouillon and Count of Evreux. His descendant, Godefroy Charles Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, carried out a number of alterations until 1786, including two fabriques, a Temple de l'Amour and a Jardin d'Hébé. The gardens, redesigned by English architects, include greenhouses and an orangery. The estate was acquired at auction in 1809 by Napoleon, who, after their divorce, offered it as a gift to Josephine, made Duchess of Navarre, who lived there for two years. His grandson, the Duc de Leuchtenberg, in turn sold the estate in 1834 to M. de Dauvet, who demolished the château in 1836 to build a factory and sold off the land and meadows in detail. The site of the château is now occupied by the Évreux racecourse, and the district has taken the name of "quartier de Navarre". Enclosed: - Sketches of Navarre.
