Very rare first edition of this important treatise on navigation, dedicated to Colbert and illustrated with 6 copper-engraved figures in the text, 1 wood-engraved figure in-t. and 4 engraved ff. of tables. Without the volvelles (moving parts) to the engravings on pp. 122, 167 and 192. A native of Dieppe, Guillaume Denys (1624-1689) was ordained a priest in 1647, but his keen interest in the world of navigation led him to teach hydrography, a vocation supported by the great Colbert, who granted him a pension of 1,200 livres, enabling him to found the Dieppe School of Hydrography in 1664. The school soon welcomed around a hundred students, including future great navigators such as Cauvette and Corruble. Ex-libris J.M. (Frère I, 338; Polak n°2513.)
