BRANDT (Gerard). Vie de Michel de Ruiter, Duc, Chevalier, Li - Lot 324
BRANDT (Gerard). Vie de Michel de Ruiter, Duc, Chevalier, Lieutenant Amiral Général de Hollande & de Oüest-Frise. Including the Maritime History of the United Provinces, from 1652 to 1676. Translated from the Dutch. Amsterdam, Blaeu, 1698. In-folio, granite calf, spine ribbed and decorated. First edition of the French translation by Nicolas Aubin. Illustrated with a frontispiece, a portrait and 8 hors-texte plates, some on double pages, engraved by Stoopendael. Michel-Adrien Van Ruyter signed up in 1618 as a ship's boy, manning anchors and ropes ashore, before becoming a privateer captain. Between 1631 and 1641, he sailed to Greenland, the West Indies and off the coast of Brazil, before being entrusted with command of a Dutch vessel in the fleet intended to rescue the Portuguese against the Spanish. Ruyter fought valiantly in the alliances and wars between the great European fleets. On his death, Europe paid him unanimous tribute. Louis XIV saw in him a man who did honor to humanity. A fine copy.
