2 volumes in one in-12 brown calf, ornate smooth spine, red mar. title page, gilt garland framing the boards (period binding). Heavy ink stain (censorship?) on p. 46. Marginal russet stain on second part.
One of the best erotic texts of the 18th century, wrongly attributed to Mirabeau, it was written by the Marquis de SENTILLY, a gentleman from Lower Normandy. This third edition (after the original of 1786 and the second of 1788, at the same address) is illustrated here with 6 free, unsigned out-of-text figures, "mediocre in the first two editions, but prettier in copies in the 1790 edition" according to Cohen.
"According to a note by M. Louis Dubois, librarian of Alençon, possessed by M. de la Sicotière, the Rideau levé is by a certain Marquis de Sentilly, a gentleman from Lower Normandy (Sentilly is a commune in the arrondissement of Argentan). It's enough to read the work to recognize that it's no more Mirabeau's than the Libertin de qualité and the other obscenities printed under his name in the same clandestine printing house, that of Jean Zacharie Malassis, in Alençon. The original edition (1786) had two in-12 volumes [...] with 12 engravings, fleurons and culs-de-lampe, engraved by Godard père, of Alençon, [...] Le Rideau levé, which motivated a condemnation inserted in the Moniteur of June 9, 1839, has had several reprints." Gay.
