Spine unstained. Small edition of 116 numbered copies; n°82 of 100 on Hollande. Minister of Louis XV, the Comte de Maurepas commissioned genealogist Pierre de Clairambault to compile a census of all the "pièces libres" written under Louis XIV and Louis XV, resulting in 40 volumes. Jules Gay is credited with the choice of plays contained in Poulet-Malassis's collection, the latter having judiciously retained only the freest, most scabrous and frivolous pieces, all stripped of circumstantial pieces, panegyrics and other idle dissertations. We come across many historical figures, staged with a rather surprising erotic license, and treated in an outrageous manner."
