ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Émile ou de l'éducation. Amsterdam, - Lot 204
ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Émile ou de l'éducation. Amsterdam, Néaulme, 1763. 4 vol. in-12, marbled calf, ornate smooth spines, gilt fillet on edges (some minor wear). Published one year after the original. Illustrated with 5 hors-texte figures after Eisen, engraved by Le Grand, de Longueil and Pasquier. Praised by some, fiercely criticized by others, condemned by civil and religious authorities from the moment of its publication, the Emile inflamed the whole of Europe. The German (1762) and English (1763) translations helped spread Rousseau's pedagogical principles, which had a lasting effect on children's education.
