LESAGE (Alain René). Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane. Par - Lot 193
LESAGE (Alain René). Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane. Paris, les libraires associés, 1747. 4 vol. in-12, red morocco, richly decorated ribbed spines, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt tr. (period binding). An important definitive edition, revised by the author and published in the year of his death, on which all future editions will be based. It is illustrated with 32 unsigned etched figures by Dubercelle. This rare and sought-after edition should not be confused with the forgery of the same date. In fact, according to Cohen, there are two editions with the same date. The original can be distinguished from the forgery by the fact that the figures on the latter have been turned upside down. Thus, on the first figure of the first volume, the canon should be on the left, whereas on the copy he is on the right. In addition, the finial printed at the top of the first page represents a temple on the original edition and an ornament on the counterfeit. This copy has both characteristics of the original. According to Brunet, this now uncommon edition contains numerous corrections and considerable additions by the author, amounting to no less than a hundred pages; it should therefore be considered the first good edition of Le Sage's masterpiece. A precious copy in contemporary morocco.
