[DORAT (Claude Joseph)]. Letter from Barnevelt, in his priso - Lot 184
[DORAT (Claude Joseph)]. Letter from Barnevelt, in his prison, to Truman his friend, preceded by a letter from the author. Paris, Jorry, 1763.
In-8, marbled calf, ornate smooth spine, gilt fillet on edges.
First edition illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette and cul-de-lampe by Eisen, engraved by De Longueil.
The origin of this verse work by Dorat is the tragedy of Barnevelt, written in 1619 by John Fletcher and Phillip Masinger, a tragic play of the Elizabethan theater. Dorat took his subject from it and adapted it to the French spirit, as he explains in his preface.
