[GUÉRIN (Maurice de)]. Diary. [Manuscript] sl1858. Autograph copy by G.S. TREBUTIEN, dated at the top of July 12. [18]58. Large in-4 of 23 ff, [1] bl., [16] ff, [1] bl., [1] f., in beautiful, perfectly legible handwriting in black ink, with corrections in red and black. Dark green half-chagrin with corners, spine ribbed with cold decoration, gilt title. Trébution, at Barbey's request, published three editions of this Journal with Didier (Reliquiae, 1861 - Journal ... 1862 - id., 1863). The date of 1858 - see above - confirms Van der Perre's opinion, adopted by Talvart, of Carteret's error in giving 1856 as the date of the original edition. Carteret probably confused this with the confidential edition of Eugénie de Guérin's "Reliquiae", also by Trébutien. In all likelihood, this handwritten copy was used by our editor to produce the publication - some corrections are clearly copies of corrections made by M. de Guérin himself. Although Barbey was behind this edition, he distanced himself from it from 1858 onwards. It was Sainte-Beuve who patronized it, and Barbey took his revenge (Pays - Feb. 1, 1861): "This biography of a poet who was even more poetry in his life than in his talent, it is not Sainte Beuve's rapid charcoal drawing that will take its place, and, one day or another, rest assured, this biography, which is still missing and which we have been waiting for, there is someone who will do it" (!). "Maurice de Guérin left in his Cahier vert (July 10, 1832-October 15, 1835) the diary of an ebb and flow, the invasion into the inner caves of the Lamennaisian tide, its ebb, its deposits."
