SARASIN (Jean-François). In-12 of [5] ff. pp. 253-515 pp. [5] ff. red morocco, finely decorated smooth spine, black marble title page, gilded frieze framing the boards with small fleurons in spandrels, gilded arms in the center of the boards (18th c. binding). Joints split. Engraved frontispiece and portrait. Edition published by Ménage and containing various pieces, some of which were highly prized and praised, such as La Conspiration de Walstein, which Nodier said was "a masterpiece that the author has not completed. This piece is the first in our Language that we can oppose to Salluste, whose nerve and purity it sometimes has." The collection also contains the treatise sought after by chess enthusiasts: Opinions du Nom & du Jeu des Echets. A fine copy, unfortunately incomplete of pp. 1-252 containing the first three pieces. With the arms of the de Montguyot family, allied to the de Viefville family through the marriage of Jeanne de Montguyot to Jean de Viefville in 1707 (grandparents of Jean-Louis de Viefville des Essarts, mayor of Guise, deputy to the Estates-General and Baron d'Empire, 1744-1820) (source d'Hozier, unknown to O.H.R.).
