88 BIS. England - TRISTAN (Flora). Walks in London. Second edition. Paris, Delloye, London, Jeffs, 1840. In-8 of li-[3]-412 pp. Jaspered half-toile, smooth threaded spine, title p. in green mar., date in tail (rel. post. end 19th c.). Original edition of this socialist and feminist manifesto: reissue copy, with fictitious mention of second edition on the title (which does not appear on the cover, here not preserved). Daughter of a Peruvian colonel and a French émigré, Flora Tristan (1803-1844) stayed four times between 1826 and 1839 in London, where she worked as a domestic servant. Her Strolls in London report on the investigation she carried out during her last stay there. A socialist and feminist activist, she condemned the social and economic excesses and inequalities of capitalist society, which particularly stigmatized women. She devoted much of her life to defending workers' rights and the status of women, and in 1843, shortly before her death, she founded the Workers' Union. Flora Tristan is the grandmother of Paul Gauguin. Scrubbed bits, rare freckles. Good ex.
