STERNE (Laurence). Voyage Sentimental, followed by Yorick's - Lot 543
STERNE (Laurence). Voyage Sentimental, followed by Yorick's letters to Eliza, By Laurent Sterne. In English and French. New edition, whose French translation has been entirely revised and corrected on the English text. Paris & Amsterdam, Dufour, [1799]. 2 vol. in-folio, rooted calf, richly ornamented smooth backs, triple golden filet framing the dishes, golden roulette on the cups, inside lace, golden tr. (Bozérian). 4-209 pp., 227 pp. The illustration includes 6 large off-text figures by Monsiau engraved by Patas, Pouquet, Miger & Dambrun. Bilingual text in English / French. (Brunet V, 533.) In 1765, Sterne travels through France and Italy, pushing to Naples and, on his return, decides to describe his journey in a "sentimental" way. The "Voyage" can be seen as an epilogue to his great unfinished novel 'Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman', but also as a response to Tobias Smollett's very unsentimental 'Voyages through France and Italy'. The novel enjoyed great success and influence and helped to make the travel story one of the dominant genres of the second half of the 18th century. In contrast to previous narratives, which seek to impart objective knowledge, 'The Sentimental Journey' insists on a subjective approach to personal tastes and feelings, morals and customs, beyond classical knowledge. Very beautifully bound by Bozérian, with a lighter, lighter foxing in places.
