MONET (Philibert). Abstract of the parallel of the French an - Lot 525
MONET (Philibert). Abstract of the parallel of the French and Latin languages, reported as close as possible to their own; assorted terms of the Arts of one & the other language, & means most easily addressed to the notice, & true use of the Latin language. Reveu, & augmenté en cette dernière Impression, & corrigé l'ortographe suivant le vray usage de la langue Françoise. Rouen, Jean Le Boullenger, 1637. In-4 brown Jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, gilt title, place and date in tail, small gilt blazon in the upper left corner of the first plate, double gilt filet on the cups, gilt tr. on marbling, lace int. (rel. post. end 19th c. de Dupré). Rare first edition, enlarged and revised, published after the great in folio edition of Lyon published in 1636 under another name. A Jesuit from Savoy, Philibert Monet (1566-1643) became known for his great mastery of Latin. He defended the principle of writing French as it is pronounced, believing that the superstitious etymological spelling brings nothing to the information and that it is only the psychological effect of the opinion of the doctrines. An illustrious precursor to our modest and more recent spelling reform. A very fine example.
