MALLARMED (Stéphane). Words and prose. Selected pieces. With - Lot 516
MALLARMED (Stéphane). Words and prose. Selected pieces. With a portrait by James M. N. WHISTLER. Paris, Perrin et Cie, 1893. In-12 of 221, [1 bl.], 2 pp. Paperback, printed cover. Portrait of Mallarmé by Whistler, lithographed, in frontispiece; the closest resemblance of portraits ever executed of Mallarmé according to his close relations, such as Rémy de Gourmont, who preferred it to that of Manet. "Whistler had kept Mallarmé posing, long enough, the first images obtained seemed weak to him and he tore them up to start over. Mallarmé, who did not explain the method well, had as if he had lost hope of success, when Whistler, at the right moment, produced a last improvisation, this one perfect and condensing all the observation accumulated by the preliminary tests", Théodore Duret. First collective edition, partly original. First edition copy (with the dry stamp of Belfond in the lower margin of the portrait), printed on vellum (after 10 Japan and 25 Holland). In this anthology, conceived by the poet as an introduction to his work for a wider public, important passages from the prose texts, and in particular from Divagation première and Divagation seconde (Divagations after which will be entitled the last collection published during the poet's lifetime in 1897), have been expanded or entirely reworked for the occasion. Very good copy (traces of sunstroke on the edges of the cover).
