[BEEPING OF REIGNY (says Cousin Jacques)]. The Constitution - Lot 486
[BEEPING OF REIGNY (says Cousin Jacques)]. The Constitution of the Moon, a political and moral dream. Paris, Froullé, 1793. In-12 of 302 pp. half-basane havana, smooth spine decorated with cold gilt filets, gilt title (post. 19th century binding). Rare first edition of this utopia of the famous journalist known under the pseudonym of Cousin Jacques, in which we find the mischievousness, gaiety and facetious ideas of this emulator of the macaronic tradition. After a 16-page foreword by the author, there is a 'Historical Precise of the Moon Revolution' describing the geography, the inhabitants, the government, etc., of the area. The Moon is filled with forests, pastures, ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, vineyards and orchards. ... The cities are large, well ventilated, all drawn in a line, but located in the valleys, because the public buildings are of extraordinary height. ...] The capital city of the moon is called Lunol [...] This city has a population of 1,600,00 souls, which is double that of Paris". Then the body of the work is constituted by the Constitution of the Moon divided into 72 chapters. The end contains the Profession of Faith of the Cousin-Jacques on the French Revolution. We find in other works of the author (Les Lunes du Cousin Jacques, Le Courrier des Planètes...) the lunar allegory which allows him to situate in a utopian place his observations on the political and social transformations of his time. Hole on the title page with traces of wax and ink, without affecting the text, qqs rare small marginal wet spots, good ex.
