England - CHESTERFIELD (Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of). Le - Lot 482
England - CHESTERFIELD (Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of). Letters of Philip Dormer Fourth Earl of Chesterfield to His Godson and Successor. Edited by the Earl of Carnarvon. Oxford, Clarendon, 1890. Small in-4 burgundy percaline cartouche with gilt decoration and title of the publisher, gilt head. Portrait in frontispiece, facsimile and 6 off-text plates (portraits and views). A man of letters with no less brilliant political and diplomatic career, Lord Chesterfield (1694-1773) wrote these letters to his natural child, born to a French woman, who died at the age of 36 in 1768. They contained many tips on his conduct in the world and on his studies during a trip to the continent, and were translated into French by Jean-François Peyron and published in Paris in 1776 and again in 1842 by Amédée Renée. Freckles on guard if not a very good copy.
