LENOIR (Alexander). Museum of French Monumens, or historical and chronological description of marble and bronze statues, bas-reliefs and tombs of famous men and women, to serve the history of France and the history of art. Decorated with engravings and augmented with an essay on the costumes of each century. Paris, Guilleminet, 1800 - 1803. 6 volumes bound in 3 vol. grand in-8 of [2] 240 pp., [2] CXXIV -160 pp., [2] 160 pp., [2] 203 pp., [2] 352 pp., [2] XXXII -130 pp. Rooted calf, richly decorated smooth backs, threaded cuts. The illustration includes 1 frontispiece and 273 plates on 272 folios including 14 folders (most of them with lines) engraved by Guyot after Alexandre Lenoir and Percier's drawings. Detail of the plates: Volume 1 - 1 to 42, 43/44 (on the same sheet) to 45 & 19 bis; Volume 2 - 46 to 88 & 61 bis; Volume 3: 89 to 135 & 114 bis; Volume 4 - 136 to 165; Volume 5 - 166 to 215; Volume 6: frontispiece, 10 pl unnumbered & 1 to 45. Original edition of this work having appeared between 1800 and 1803, by very complete subscriptions of the supplement (volume 6) devoted to the history of painting on glass in France, the description of the old stained glasses, as well as the collection of the stained glasses of Psyche and Cupid according to the drawings of Raphael. This beautiful book, of which few copies remain, becomes all the more precious as the monuments it represents, which had been gathered with such care and intelligence by M. Lenoir, are now scattered. (Quérard V, 168; Brunet III, 978.) Very beautiful copy in spite of a small wetness at the end of volume 6.
