FILHOL (A. M.), CARAFFE (A. Ch.), LAVALLEE (J.) & JAL (M. A.). * Gallery of the Napoleon Museum. ** Royal Museum of France or engraved collection of masterpieces of painting and sculpture which it has enriched since the restoration. Paris, Filhol, 1804-1827. 11 vol. grand in-4, * red half-marquin with wedges, richly ornamented back ribs (Doll) Superb illustration engraved with etching in the first print, including 1 fontispiece, 1 portrait and 720 plates out of text printed on strong vellum with the grey lettering, due to Bovidet, Massard, Niquet, Oortman, Villerey and others from the paintings then kept in the Louvre. Normal absence of the 18 plates from the first issues that were not printed in in-4 format. Original edition of this important catalogue raisonné of the Louvre Museum under the Empire, published by the engraver Antoine-Michel Filhol and dedicated to Napoleon I. At the end of 1802, the First Consul dissolved the former administration of the Musée central des Arts and appointed Vivant Denon as Director General. Enriched with trophies of arms, the Musée Napoléon became the most beautiful museum in the universe and its collections served as the starting point for the cataloguing enterprise. At the fall of the Empire, the museum was dismantled. This work is the most precious testimony of its past greatness. ** half red wedged half-maroquin with richly decorated nerves (Thouvenin). Original edition of this rare supplement given by Mrs. Filhol with explanatory notes by Mr. Jal. It is illustrated with 72 off-text plates. Very nice copy printed on beautiful vellum paper and almost without freckles (a few tiny traces). Complete with the supplement which is often missing.
