Encyclopedia of Arts and Crafts. Modern Decoration (Volumes - Lot 361
Encyclopedia of Arts and Crafts. Modern Decoration (Volumes I and II) - Stylish Decoration (Volume I). Paris, Albert Morancé, [1928-1929]. 3 vol. in-4 in ff., under wallets half black cloth, stylized in colors, with laces, from the publisher. (A small but not serious snag on the back). Stylish decoration (volume I): (4) pp., 100 black and color plates, (4) pp. tables. (Small freckles in places.) Modern decoration (volume I) : (4) pp., 100 black and color plates, (4) pp. tables. Modern decoration (volume II) : (4) pp., 100 black and color plates, (4) pp. tables. Very good copies of this excellent publication (small marginal freckles in places). The 2 volumes "Décoration moderne" are a must for Art Deco (furniture, objets d'art, decoration, architecture, design, fittings, bindings, advertising, textiles, jewellery...) reproducing works by Jean Dunand, Robert Lalique, Fernand Léger, Prouvé, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Pierre Chareau, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Sonia Delaunay, Schmied, Pierre Legrain, etc. The purpose of the volume "Décoration de style" (reproducing details of ancient architecture and decoration) was, according to the photographer Eliane Janet-Lecaisne, to "seek in the past, to bring them to life, a spirit of truth, refinement, an experience of which we are the heirs. To rediscover (...) the aesthetic and practical preoccupations of the ancient craftsmen (...)", a synthetic source of inspiration for the modern artists and craftsmen of the time, in short.
