MAZOT (François). The painting of the Cross represented in t - Lot 338
MAZOT (François). The painting of the Cross represented in the ceremonies of the Holy Mass. Together the treasure of the devotion to the suffering of Nre. S. L. C. all enriched with beautiful figures. Paris, Mazot, 1651. In-8, red morocco, ribbed back decorated with grotesque, large gilt decoration framing the dishes. Very charming work published by the engraver and printer François Mazot, entirely engraved on copper, decorated with a title engraved by Jean Collin, the portrait of the dedicatee the keeper of the seals Charles de l'Aubespine (1580-1653) engraved by Guilliam De Gheyn, and 90 unsigned copper engravings (only the first engraving of the Litanies bears Collin's name), including the 35 curious scenes of the mass showing him standing before the altar throughout the service, to which the full-length portraits of the apostles, saints and great dignitaries of the Church respond opposite, and the 10 remarkable brass instruments giving the penitential psalms surrounded by the portraits of the actors of the Old Testament. The work was very carefully prepared and was considered precious in its time, and its copies were worthy of being entrusted to the best bookbinders in Paris. For this reason, it appears in the largest collections of the 19th century. Nice copy despite ss wettings.
