Original edition of this large panorama of the theatre since its origin in France which evokes many unknown authors and deals with the history of chivalry and public festivals. It is illustrated with a frontispiece and 44 non-text plates: costumes, plans, cups, heroes of tragedies, etc. The set consists of 25 parts, but the last one is almost always missing (this is the case for this copy). Nice copy in period blond calf with the arms of Louis-Marie-Augustin, Duke of AUMONT. After having received the charge of first gentleman of the chamber at the death of his father, he was successively peer of France in 1736, brigadier of cavalry in 1740, marshal of camp in 1743, knight of the Holy Spirit in 1745 and lieutenant general in 1748. In July of the same year, he obtained the government of the city and the castle of Compiègne, in November 1751, that of Boulogne and Boulonais, in 1761, that of Montreuil and finally that of Chauny, of which he became Grand Bailiff. The Duke of Aumont had built up magnificent collections of art and books with remarkable care and patience. Most of the bindings, made of morocco or marbled calfskin, came out of Padeloup's hands.
