THEOCRITE. Idyllia. Eiusdem Epigrammata. Simmiae Rhodii Ovum - Lot 314
THEOCRITE. Idyllia. Eiusdem Epigrammata. Simmiae Rhodii Ovum, Alae, Securis, Fistula. Dosiadis Ara. Omnia cum interpretatione latina. In Virginlianas et Nas, imitations Theocriti, Observations H. Stephani. Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1579. 3 parts of [16]-447-[1], 63-[1], 128 pp. bound in one vol. in-16 dark blue morocco, smooth spine richly and finely decorated, gilt title, date on tail, double gilt fillet and gilt garland framing the plates, gilt fillet on the cups, double gilt fillet framing the counterflats, pink tabis guards (19th c. Bozérian rel. young, signed in tail). Greek text with the Latin translation opposite. Important edition of the Greek bucolic poets by Henri Estienne, the only one coming out of his presses in 1579. Based on the 1566 edition of the Poetae graeci principes and enriched with several new corrections by H. Estienne himself, it contains, among Simias' poems, the famous Greek rhopalic verse poems (in the form of an egg, an axe, wings...), the process of which will be repeated a few centuries later by Apollinaire with his "Calligrams". Ex-libris of the English collector Henry B.H. Beaufoy (1786-1851). Very nice copy. (Renouard 147, 1; Adams T-473; Brunet V, 782; Schreiber, 206).
